Protein skimmer help?

i had an in-sump protien skimmer and had to take it out to put in a chiller. what is the best option for another skimmer? hang on, inline. and what is a good brand?
Answers:
The two that I would recommend are Aqua C Remora for a cheap option, and a slightly more expensive option is the Deltec MCE. Just stay away from the Seaclone as I have heard more problems that success stories with those.
What size tank and what kinda of bio load do you have?

Problems with spawning Bettas ; The bubble nest?

I, by the way, got my breeding info off bettatalk.com
Alright, so I had my male in the tank and my female in the chimney. He flared at her, ect. ect. I left her in there a whole day! The next day, I looked...there was no bubble nest or nests anywhere?
So, I tried letting the female in, and then hoping he would build it then. No luck. The male chased her, flared, ect. and she showed interest, and there's still no bubble nest. I had them together for about 2 hours now. I put in the half stirofoam cup, I have the heater, corner filter, and they're in a 10 gallon tank! I don't understand why he won't blow bubbles?!
Answers:
Did you condition them both? If the male isn't in breeding condition then he will not blow a bubble nest. Seperate them for a week or so and try again. Be sure to feed them both foods that are full of protein.
you will need to condition them for a week or two prior to introduction with lots of delicious yummy food, then let them see each other for another week or so, do not let them in with each other until the female is bulging with eggs, and there's a bubble nest. this is where indian almond leaf (IAL) is really handy, it's like betta aphrodisiac!
i would lower the water level as well, half full is fine, about 6" deep. and turn off the filter, or use a sponge filter, any kind of surface movement will ruin any chance of a successful nest. you can use an IAL to float on the top, the male needs something to anchor the nest to.
if still nothing, maybe your guys just don't fancy each other!
I agree with Luvin Life on this one but I wanted to add that you don't want to add the female with the male untill he has already blown bubble nests after seeing her once they are both conditioned. Then it is time to put them together.
Are they conditioned?
Did you try a water change?
Maybe your pair just aren't suitable for each other?
go to bettaforums.com
You need to condition your bettas for at least two weeks, not just a day. If you put them together and there is any aggression, it means one or both of them are not ready to breed.
Betta breeding is all about patience.
Try separating them for a few days leaving the male in the breeding tank, making sure both are well fed and water temp is at arnd 80F. Sometimes it takes a few attempts to get them to do it right especially if both of them has no breeding experiences.

Problem with my fish tank!!!!?

ok so...
i have this 10 gallon tank and now all of a sudden i start to see a bunch of snails that came out of nowhere, yesterday i took about 15 out and today i took about 7 out and theres still more ugh its so frustrating. i know why they are there, because i bought aquarium plants for it (the plants a are real, i bought them at petsmart) but anyway, if you can tell me how to get them the hell oiut with out kill my fish that would be great. thanks a lot.
Answers:
just go ask the people at petsmart. they would know before anyone on here would
if theres anny snail repellent use that.
well for starters get rid of the plants i got some plants from pets mart too but i cleaned them before i put them into my tank and no snails. take out the fish and put them into a seprate place wash out the tank rocks and all set it up only this time wash the plants before puting them into the tank and make sure all snail are removed. it should work. good luck and make sure to wash the plants. i would know my bro works as a fish tech.
You can buy medication or a small loach like a skunk loach. On another snail question I showed this link about snails. Try it out and see if it works. http://www.usc.edu/cssf/current/projects...
Pet-smart is the worst for snails on the live plants... I just cleaned out my 50 gal tank and had over 100 lil pests in there sure my tank walls were clean but they were beginning to clog up my filters and everything... what I do is just clean my tank regularly and pick them out weeding them out helps but there is no real way i' ve found yet to get rid of them... I've heard a penny in the tank will sterilize them but I'm scared to try it cause i breed fish in my tank also.
hello i had the same problems when i bought my plants. i bought a chemical snail remover but it killed quite a lot of my fish so i wouldn't recommend it. i got a loach which ate most of it but it got too big that they started attacking my smaller fish. and so what i did was i did a general cleaning. I cleaned my gravel, decorations and plants really well made sure no eggs or snail are left. then i added hot water for about 30 mins then added potassium permengenate which i bought from the chemist. Then you would see snails float (dead ones) float. Oh and you would see slimy things which are the eggs of the snails. Take them out too. i cleaned my aquarium with a bit of bleach and water. don't forget the hood and the filter they could have snail eggs too. well hope it helped.
if you want to try pennies make sure they are old pennies as most modern pennies are mostly zinc these days.
as this is a common problem most pet shops carry a few products that are designed to kill snails without harming fish. HOWEVER if you have a lot of snails remember to do a water change after treating as all the dead snails rotting in your tank could cause problems with ammonia or nitrites
Snails are hard to get rid of when they are there. They reproduce like crazy. And one snail alone can lay eggs and fertalize them. Snails usually lay eggs on plants, when you buy plants there is a rish of getting snails. There are few fish which eat these, but they may be too big for your tank. All I can think of is get a piece of lettuce, run it under hot water, tie a cotton ball to it and let it sink. Next morning you will see the snails on the lettuce, toss it out and do this until they are all gone. Snails can hide under your gravel so you never know how many you got. They also sell chemicals to get rid of em, I don't agree with chemicals though. Best way is to get a preditor or do the lettuce trick. You may not get rid of em all but you may keep em under control.
yea get rid of the plants
Here is a great site on how to get rid of them, I actually like the vegetable bait one the best
http://www.fishfriend.com/articles/getti...
There was actually just a similar question here about 4 days ago and somebody recommended that actually
So just try it

Hope that helps
good luck

It is almost impossible to get rid of mystery snails. There are chemicals that will kill them. If you only have a ten gallon tank the best way my be to do a complete water change. Clean the tank and gravel thoroughly. The snails will lay egg clutches usually on the glass, so be sure it is clean before refilling. The plants are most likely the source of the problem. Examine the plants for snails and egg clutches if you plan to keep the plants.
You can try get a new tank put new gravel and fake plants with a clean snail-free filter and place all your fish in there.
And your snail infested tank with GSP Green Spotted Puffer Fish.
This is just an option its your choice.
Using lettuce is the best way, just put the lettuce in clean container that has not had soap in it with holes big for the snails to get in but not your fish in the morning quite a few snails should be on it so just empty them out and reset it, you can do this for several day until you notice less snails. This method probably won't total wipe them out but will get rid of alot of them and control their numbers,I would try it before putting any chemicals in your tank to kill them.

Problem with dead filter. Any help?

I just realized my filters dead, it doesn't filter the water, it just runs over the top of the charcoal and sponge. I'm getting a new filter this afternoon as soon as I can. Its an AquaClear mini and I've been having problems with it for weeks. I looked it up on the internet and the warrenty is only for two years and I've had it forever. The motor still runs but it doesn't work anymore.
My problem is that since my filter wasn't working, my tank looked dirty; so I decided to clean it. I've just realized its dead after I put all my fish in a pot, and started taking the gravel out to clean it. I knocked up all the fish poo so the water looks like mud and clearly I can't put my fish back.
I have three black phantom tetras and a pleco in my 10 gallon tank. Any suggestions on how to get the filter to work? Best course of action?
I didn't have the best luck with my last fish question but I'm going to try again. Please no stupid one word answers.
Answers:
You should be using a gravel vacuum weekly to change 20% of your water and suck the dirt out of the gravel even if you have a filter. You should never move your fish out of the tank or totally empty it to clean this is very stressful for them .If you haven't been doing this that is why your tank is so dirty and you need to start ,it will be much better for your fish,so you should get a gravel vacuum (about 5 dollars)at the same time as your new filter.
If you don't know about cycling your tank try reading this as well.
http://www.worldcichlids.com/faqs/cyclin...
Obviously the best thing to do is go get a new filter. Until you have one and the tank is clean and running with the charcoal to clean the water you should keep the fish in the pot they are in as long as it isnt too small. Make sure they arent frantic, or if necessary transfer them to a larger pot and add some water but dont throw out the water they are in now since they are used to it.
As far as filters go I would suggest a Penguin Bio-wheel. Expensive but mine never died in 4 years and it keeps the water looking really good longer than a Whisper or Aqua-Clear.
Forgive me if I'm insulting your intelligence here because maybe you do this, but you didn't mentioned whether you rinse and ocassionally change the filter cartridge, charcoal, sponge, and/or whatever media you have. If you do rinse and ocassionally replace your media, then yes, I would say your filter is not working properly, however, if you do not rinse and ocassionally change your media, I would suggest buying a new cartridge for your existing filter before buying a whole new filter. And yes, I agree with the Answerer above. A filter is not going to filter out all of the debris that collects in your tank. You must siphon the detritus from your substrate once every week.

Problem in the Soritory?

I have some bettas in a 29 gallon tank and I added a half sized female recently and yesterday I noticed a huge chunk bitten out of her tail and this morning she didn't come out of hiding for breakfast or come out yesterday for dinner. My neighbor has a community 10 gallon w/ 2 females, but they don't pick on anyone because we once had one that was about 3/5 their size in there and they pretty much left her be. My neighbors tank has enough room for her, so would it be best to put her in the 10 gal instead? I feel bad that she would be going in a tank about 1/3 of the size of the other one, but since she can't eat w/out getting bullied, should I remove her? I would remove the bully, but basically all the bettas higher in the pecking order are picking on her.
Thanks
Answers:
I suggest yo do remove the new smaller female into a tank of her own or to your neighbours, And in future when you add fish to a tank re-arange all the deco and plants so the new fish doesnt enter the other fish's teritoria and get attacked.

PREVIOUS or CURRENT FISH OWNERS: FISH TANK PROBLEMS!! PLEASE HELP?

I cleaned my fish tank yesterday and it was sparkling. Now today it's cloudy again. I just got the fish 2 days ago so could it be that they are scared and pooping everywhere 'cause it's a new place? Or do I just have to clean it more than every wednesday or thursday? PLEASE HELP!
Answers:
You are most likely cleaning the tank too well each time you clean it. Fish need a certain level of particular bacteria in the tank to break down harmful and deadly waste products and over cleaning removes too much of this bacteria which in turn leads to the cloudy water you are seeing. This process is usually referred to as cycling the tank. Here'a a link that explains the entire process and how you can properly deal with the process to keep from losing anymore fish. Please also see the link at the bottom of this page titled cleaning your tank.
http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php...
If after reading these (they are short) you have any additional questions about the nitrogen cycle and your tank, feel free to email me.
MM
I don't know what filter you have on the tank but you have to let the filters do their job. Stop cleaning it so much and give the system a chance to stabilize. It could take a while but the water will get clear. Cleaning it once a week is very excessive. I've been doing this for 30 years so believe me, "less is more".
A little bit of algae growth on the glass and decorations is also a good sign that things are going well.
Avoid using chemicals to clear the water or stabilize it.
Give it time.
i agree with magicman. the cloudiness is the bacterial imbalance. so just dont clean your tank spotless.
the cloudiness will eventually settle but a placastomas or some snails will help to keep algae and other particles minimal a placastomas is very (hard to kill) unlike snails

I was recommend to go to the following link, it has helped alot. Even has some videos of pregnant and giving birth guppies!. What to look for at least.
Good luck my first lot of babies all got eaten only cause I didn't know that mum had delivered.
Maybe she will deliver today i dunno with out seeing your fish...but congratulations daddy
arrr thats well cool i wish mine were havin babes!! who knows i guess you'll just have to wait an see!
Could be very soon and there could be more fish....."A Tank Filled Platty Plus" .
It's not a sure sign that she will have more just because she is larger this time around. It could be larger babies. That said, odds are good she will have a few more, most females do on the second time. In fact, they often don't get tot he really larger broods until they are 12-18 months old. They are usually about 5-6 months when you get them from a shop.
Average gestation time for platys is about 28 days, bu that's just an average and she could have them as much as a week early or 3 weeks late and still not be out of what is considered to be normal. So to answer the question, yes, it could be any day, but expect it to take another week or so.
MM
they are pregnant for about 28 days so she should have them sometime this week, watch out for her sitting at the bottom or hiding.
mine had a white looking spot near her anus and later that day I looked into the tank and seen the fry hiding in the java moss.

Pregnant tropical fish ?

My platy gave birth around 12 days ago and I have noticed now that it looks pregnant again ( as i can see the babies devloping inside the female) when shall i put her back into the breeding tank? She looks heavily pregnant, but not as though she is going to burst just yet, so what do you suggest?
best anser will get top points*****
Thanks, danny
sooner the better please .
Answers:
Id watch for her sitting round bottom of tank and hiding and move her then, they get a very large black dot near their anus when they about to pop.
If the breeding tank is free then you could move her in now but i would suggest bagging her and let her float on top of breeding tank to prevent shock, thats unless your breeding tank is at the same temp
wait a little longer and if u think she is close to having them u will have to store the babies somewhere else suitable. u cant put the mother and them together. no dought she is pregnant again good luck!
put her back now. do you have room for more babies? if not, raise the soon to be born baibies until they are a little bit older and give them to your buddies... or sell em to the pet store =)
To be on the safe side id stick her in there now it can't hurt the last thing you want is your fish eating the babies.. Platy's are livebearing fish they're nearly almost always pregnant im afraid just watch out that your tank doesn't become over crowded with her offspring she seems quite a busy lady lol
= )
I would put her in an another tank if her older babies are still too small. if they are small but too big to eat then you can put her in the same breeding tank. make sure that your tank is not overcrowded! Good Luck!
The gestation period for all livebearers is 28 days, so you still have at least 2 more weeks before putting her in
But consider getting a second breeder, because the others will stil be to small to let go, unless you have a good planted tank with live plants
The can have up to 6 times fry without a male around because they can store the sperm for that long

Hope that helps
Good luck

EB
They can give birth every four weeks so I'd leave her a while yet. The last week when she looks really big will be soon enough.
You also need to consider what you will do with the fry. The only ones my LFS will take are the Mickey Mouse preferably the Silver variety. (He says he'd be over-run with live-bearers if he took all the ones he was offered) You can quickly become over-stocked with fish. Even when you don't try to breed a few fry make it to adult-hood.
Female live bearers like Platys and Guppies seem to be permanently pregnant if there is a male around and even if there isn't they seem to be able to utilise sperm from a previous mating because having given birth to one brood they immediately set about producing another whether a male is present or not.
As far as putting them in a separate tank is concerned though, it rather depends upon whether you've got the space or some outlet for hundreds of young.
Since most aquarists run out of both fairly quickly, the birth eventually seems to take place in the community tank where the young have to take their chances as they do in the wild.
Leave her in her tank, don't move her, if you do, she is going to suffer a lot of stress and could absorb her babies!

Pregnant Platy?

I have 3 dwarf sunburst platies in my 39 gallon tank. two of them have big bellies and i don't know if the're eating too much or if the're pregnant. How can i tell? and if they are pregnant, should i move them to my 7 gallon tank? i feed them twice a day and they eat it all in about a minute.
Answers:
It's hard to find a platy that isn't preggers. During their pregnancy, you'll notice a small darker spot right by her opening. Chances are that they are pregnant and give birth at 4-5 weeks in. The babies are born live so no eggs.
Addition: All platies are livebearers. No eggs.
try feeding them once a day and then give it a week. if there belies are still big by then there probley pregnant. ifyour not sure still start looking for eggs on the bottom of the tank or on of your gravel if you have gravel.
Best way to tell is not to feed them for a few days (they'll be fine don't worry). If they slim up it's probably overfeeding. My guess is they are prego. If there are more than just those three in your tank I would but them in the 7 gallon; I fine doing it sooner is better so they don't get to stressed right before there due date. Hope this helps.

Pregnant molly symtoms?

I have a dalmation molly that is pregnant. I was wondering how to tell if she was going to have babies soon. She was pregnant when I got her, and I don't know how long she was, and I think she might have them soon, but I can't tell. If you could help me, that would be great!

OMG, these answers terrible
The gestation period is 28 days with livebearers
If you can't see the gravid spot, the best thing to go with is the squary appearance females get just before birth beneath there head
here is an example of a guppy
http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=81...

As for the fry, don't put the female in a breeder, they are way to small for her and she will only be stressed out and most likely abort her babies
The best thing to do is getting a bunch of live plants for your tank where your fry can hide

Hope that helps
Good luck

well, for my guppies and mollies, it's about 30 days after they deliver their last batch of fry. I've never had platys, but I know they run similar to mollies, so I'd expect them to be about the same.
Most livebearers will give birth every 28 days..give or take a few.

Pregnant guppys?

ok so the other day i went to the pet store and bought two guppys (one male and one female) . Well on the way home i noticed that they were being pretty friendly to each other and not freaking out and jumpng around the bag as most od my fish had done. I got home put them in the tank and well i came back today after school and noticed a black gravid spot on the female! The males and females were kept in diffrent tank at the pet store so this happened over night?! Is this normal to happen after one day? And also the gravid spot is really noticable (since the fish is yellow) doesnt it take time to show up?
Answers:
well...there are a few ways why they would occur.
one reason would be that mating with another fish occured at the supplier ( sure, the petstores keep them apart but the people to ship the fish may not have) she may have been pregant before you bought her.
a second possiblity is that she isn't virgin. i noticed that (i have feeder fish as pets so it might be different) guppies that had mated or given birth before still kept a very light gravid spot. once preganated it would darken. ( i look at my guppies a lot.its a lot better then doing math D: ) sometimes, they would have the gravid spot when she had matured. the gravid spot is one of the few ways to identify if it is a male or female.
its possible that they had mated already. i have a tank full of guppies and i rarely see the females without a dark gravid spot. the males are always so busy...
It is very common for guppies, and other fish, to come to the pet store pregnant. This is very likely to have happened at the supplier. When you have a tank filled with several hundred female fish, it isn't hard to miss a male or two.

Pregnant guppies?

i have 2 pregnant guppies and 1 of them is very agressive, i move her in2 a "baby-saver" and the other female in the same tank with the baby-saver but the 1 in the baby-saver keeps jumping out..
will it b ok 2 leave the 2 preg female 2gether untill the fry r born?
also how long r they pregers 4?
i brought them pregnant so not sure how far they are but the dark spots under ther abs have gotten bigger and moved back more...
anything u can tell me would be great,
thx..
Answers:
When i had guppies in my fish tank i was told to seperate the babies from the adults as they tend to eat them. I don't know about pregnant females, but if one or both of two males are agressive, they will fight till one of them dies. So i suggest you put one of the pregnant fish in a closed baby-savers or get another heater and put it in a tempory bowl.
They are usually pregnant for a few weeks, and the babies are really small. So as soon as you see signs of small guppies swimmin around, use a net and put them in a baby-saver if there are other adults in the tank. Hope this helps.
Link for a page about breeding guppies:
http://guppyplace.tripod.com/breeding.ht...
There are suggestions about how to take care of the females, but also suggestions about how to take care of the fry.
I have a tank where I keep "unwanted" guppies and I keep several females and males together. They have fry every so often and many of them survive even though they are together with the older guppies. It's not recommended for breeding, but it shows that the fry does have a chance of survival even though they are with older guppies.
They are pregnant for about 25 days but it can differ a couple of days in either direction from time to time and female to female.

Pregnant Guppie and Mollies?

I have had guppie litter before but not mollies, i ahve 2 pregnant guppies and 1 pregnant mollie, a few days ago they all looked very pregnant and now they only look it alittle and they still have the spot of the side
Answers:
Check your filter. Some fry will get stuck in there and survive. When you take your sponge out, put it in some water and move it around a bit. They might have got eaten..
Sounds like they had the fry. If you have a lot of hiding material for the babies, they may be hiding in there. If you don't, the babies may have been eaten.
They may have had the fry. The fry may also be hiding. Some people say that mollies will eat their fry however that hasnt been my experience. The guppy fry have almost ertainly been eaten. Next time separate the pregnant females when they look plump.

Pregnant fish?

i think my guppie is pregnant i have a net for the fry and a breeding thing to put the prgnant fish in. will it hurt the pregnant fish if i put her in to early because its kindof a small space. and also what is the best way to tell when she is about to release her babyswithen like a day.
Answers:
Just let her be in her tank, she and the babies will be fine, as long as you add a lot of live plants for the fry to hid
Here is a video that shows a guppy about 2 hours before birth, if you watch carefully you will see that she has a sqared appearance beneath her head
http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=81...
I wouldn't move her, it will just stress her out
And I wouldn't net the babies out either, because they grow much faster and healthier in a big environment then in a small confined space

Hope that helps
Good luck

EB
just let her lay her eggs then u can pick them up with a net and do wat u wanna do with them.
I would put her in now. Guppies are live bearers so there are no eggs to pick up. She will be fine as long as you don't leave her in there for too long.
Guppies are livebearers and they will have anywhere from 20-200 live babies, they have the fry every four weeks so by the time one batch is growing up youll have another being developed, female guppies can hold multiple patches of sperm so she can get pregnent one time and have 4-5 groups of babies, her gravid spot, the dark spot by her anal fin will become black and big when she is about to have them, if you look at her from the front her belly will look square, ide put her in the breeder net for a few days and she will be fine, but as soon as she has them you need to seperate them because she will eat the baby fry, good luck
Guppies are livebearers, which means they DO NOT lay eggs. They give live births. There is a 99.9% chance that she is pregnant. If she's with males, then yes, she's pregnant. If she was fat with a dark gravid spot when you got her, then yes, she pregnant. Female guppies are almost always pregnant. I've only ever seen one female guppy in my life that wasn't pregnant. DON'T MOVE HER ANYWHERE! Just think of the stress that goes into moving fish from one tank, to another. Now, double that stress. That's what your female is feeling. It's too dangerous for her to feel that much stress while giving birth. She will either die, or her fry will die, or they will both die. I'm telling you right now, DON"T MOVE HER AT ALL! Just scoop the babies out of the tank after she gives birth!
You can never reallly tell when she will realease her fry. Usually though, when she starts hiding more often, and the males seem to bother her more often, I'd say she's ready to give birth. If it makes you feel better, you can move the males. The males seem WAY more hardy then the females, and plus, their not pregnant! This will give the female much more ease while giving birth.
Hope that helped! Good luck!
no it wont hurt her
i would put her in, but if you are unsure you can put her in a tank with lots of plants. that way, even if you put her in to late, the frys are able to swim away from her and hide in the foliage.
hi my guppy fish was pregnant had had around 20 babies and week has gone and she was still fat and today she has just died could there be babies inside her still and what should we do with her. and what could she of died of cose she was swimming around this moring

Power Filters?

Which brand would be best for a 20 gal tank holding two fantail goldfish? I hear that these fish are really dirty so do I need extra filtration?
Answers:
Aquaclear. For a tank like yours, with goldfish, I would recommend using 2 filters(2 Aquaclear 30's), one on each side of the tank.
No bones about it, best power filter available. I have 12 of them running at the moment, and never hear a peep out of them. I have tried bio-wheels, and there is no comparison on how much better the Aquaclear works.
Get a Marineland Bio-Wheel Penguin 100, it has a three step filtration process and I personally use them!! Also the cartridges are very reasonable here is the link: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/pr...
Get a 40 gal filter and keep it changed often and you dont feed alot of food and you should be good..but yes gold fish are dirty fish..but if you take care of them they will live long and grow nice..but watch for fin rot!!

Pot bellied mollies?

If i get por bellied mollies and the have fry, Will any actually make it to adult hood, And is it true that pot bellied mollies are disabled or somthing?
Answers:
Yes the will breed and make it to adult hood if given proper water conditions and a resonable size tank,
~ GG
Yes they will breed and with proper care will grow to full size in a year or so. They have been bred for the "balloon" shape, and they are able to live like most other mollies.
I think what you mean when you say, "disabled," is that their genetic makeup has been compromised. To achieve the pot-belly, these fish are highly in-bred, and this, thus, reduces their life expectancy. Because of this, pot-bellied mollies, also known as balloon mollies, only have about a 1 to 1 1/2 year life expectancy. They are still able to breed and reproduce, but they live very short lives.

I think you mean balloon mollies. A fish with a sticking out stomach. When balloon mollie fry are born they look like any other fry. Little clear specks with eyes , a heart and a stomach. You willl only be able to see what your fry will look like in adulthood after a few months
All mollies are the same species so they can interbreed. If you have serveral type of mollies in a tank there is no teling what they will look like.
If you are certain that the parents are both pot belly mollies then they should like like the parents. The babies will need a place to hide or they will be eaten.
It is best to put them in their own tank after birth.
Yeah, Balloon Molly babies look just like pretty much all other baby fish. I have over 30 of them myself right now! They're about 1 week old and look exactly like the baby Lyretails I have. I hope this helps!

Pot bellied molie fry?

Are pot bellied mollie fry hard to rasie?
Answers:
No there rather easy, There as easy as other livebearers (guppies, platies, swodtails) There probibly the easiset fish to breed and raise.
~ GG
Not at all. They should be realtively easy like all live bearing fish.
For a higher chance of survival get a breeding bet/ box. They can swim around care free and the other fish can't get to them
You can feed them baby brineshrimp. Some say don't put in the water that comes with the brineshrimp because it is salt water but suprisingly mollies like a bit a salt in their water.
If brineshrimp is a problem, powdered fish flakes will do just fine. Just crush it up in the corner of a plastic bag and use the tip of a wet toothpick and dip it into the powder then just dip the toothpick in the bredding net.
Anyway, hope that helps.
good luck!

Possible??

Do you think its possible to raise 50 platie fry from fry to about 1inch, With daily water changes of 50% and extra filteration?
Answers:
I think there would be a disease out break or they would probibly be stunted.
~ GG
Anything is possible, the question is, is it probable or likely or... humane? Okay, so you have about a 15-20 gallon tank. Water changes and super filtration is not all there is to it. It's also a matter of stunting and diseases. To raise 50 platy to 1 inch in size (and what do you do with them then?) and assuming they all survive, to raise them in a healthy way so they grow well, you honestly need about a 60 gallon aquarium. If you don't have the fry yet, don't encourage it if you can't provide a good environment. If you do, well, it would be better to get a larger tank or split them up into a couple of tanks. Otherwise, you are most likely going to lose more fish than you normally would.
It is possible yeah. 2 feet by what? Fry themselves initally are not going to cause any problems in terms of your filtration at 50, nor take up excessive space. As they start to grow out to that one inch, then you'd need to hip up those changes more. I don't think you need to even go so far as 50%. Consider the overall mass of the fish at first. That's a high number, but in terms of waste volume, very little. Your biggest taxation on your filtration would be excess food, and not the fish themselves, initially. As long as you have enough surface area for oxygenation as they grow out, you could do that and transfer them to longer term holding as needed. Only disadvantage to having that many in one tank, is all it'd take is one thing to get in there...ich, droopsy ect...and there you go, mass spreading.
If you need further advice, feel free to contact me in private via my profile.
JV
Sure, but 50% water changes every day is excessive. Cut it back to 10% water changes, especially if you are doing it every day. If you change 1/2 the water every day you are going to change the water chemistry too much and stress the fish out, leaving them more prone to disease. The bioload from fry is very small, especially platy fry as they are very little fish. Don't be surprised if you lose a few. It'd be unusual to have every little fry from that big of a drop survive. Good luck with them, though!

Porcuine puffer fish?

Can a porcupine puffer go in a tank with a
Powder Blue tang
Clown fish
Coral Beauty
Golden coris wrasse
Spike fin flame goby
orchid dotty back
and maybe damsels
Answers:
no they are mean little buggers no matter how cute they look,
if you put one in that tank say good bye to the goby the beauty and any other one it can catch
Ive even had them eat coral cats and they have poison skin on them , he eat them from the tail up left the skin and head
Porcupine Puffer will eat many invertebrates and at least sample some of the others. Do not mix them with triggers or fish that are small enough for them to eat. They generally get along well with clownfish, wrasses, tangs, angels, butterflies (except those with long flowing fins), hawkfish, dottybacks and damsels. Choose a puffer鈥檚 tankmates carefully to avoid nipped fins and injuries. Don鈥檛 mix them with slow moving fish that have long flowing fins.
You'll need a large tank like 100 gallons for the puffer to feel safe with all those fish. The other fish will need to be about the same size as the puffer. Or he will attack them. Also you need to feed the puffer meat so he will leave the other fish alone. You will also need to watch and make sure he doesn't puff up because if he does it allot he has a poison that he secretes when he blows up and if he keeps secreting it he will kill all the other fish with it. Puffers are not a beginner fish I would sick with what you got on that list .
As a general cautious rule, puffers should be kept in a species-only tank. They are pretty aggressive and territorial to other fish.
in a large enough tank everything you listed can get along except the puffer and damsels. Both those fish are agressive and will fight with those fish. Damsels are even known to fisht with fish that are many times the size of themselves. they are fearless. I had a tank of damsels and they would attack my hand when i put it in the tank to clean. Puffers are also very agressive if you add puffers and damsels into that mix you are looking for trouble.

Pond not exiting need help fish?

OK, i have a 350 gallon pond with 3 small koi between 4-6 inches also i have many plants. it looks nice but the middle looks dull because only 3 small fish swim there i was wondering if i decided to add fish like common goldfish or comet goldfish (preferibly not koi) could i and witch fish could i put in. it does not have to be commons or comets there just examples but could i. make sure ideas invold color to add livlyness no plant or decor because i have a lot alreay thx.
Answers:
I would suggest you simply wait it out. Your Koi will eventually grow to be all the fish you will need in that pond. You could however add a few comets to remove later, as long as you don't keep them in the pond more than a year.
MM
Koi get huge, so even though it may look dull, I think you are okay without.
You can't add any additional fish. You are at your limit. Your fish to water ratio is about 100 gallons of water per fish, and that's about your minimum for koi. Your koi are already reaching a good size and they will only grow more from there. I know it seems like the pond is kind of empty, but this is how koi ponds need to be.
My Koi started out at 6 inches long. They are now about 19 inches long. In a pond that small, you won't need any more fish, believe me. I fed my floating catfish food and they grow REALLY fast on that stuff. Give them a little color enhancement food now and then as Koi change colors all their lives.
no matter what you decide to put in your tank, remember some fish are temperature sensitive and will die in the winter, I have ponds and put feeder gold fih in them (comets) I bought a variety of them that have black, orange, gold and white coloring. I bought 30 and fed them well , some died, but have about 18 left. have had them 3 yrs and they are about 10" long now, have 1 9yrs old that is 18" depending on where you live you might consider bluegill or other sun fish too, if it legal, they can be a lot of fun

Plez help how do i breed my bettas?

how do i breed my bettas if all the male does is attak her i tryed breed them like it said on the internet but for 48 hours all the male did was try to kill her i went to the moveies and when i came back most of her fins wer gone so how should i breed them
Answers:
You need to condition them for at least 2 weeks before trying to breed them
you also need a 10 gallon tank with 6 inch of water and bare bottom as well as plants for the female to hide from the male
Here are a couple of great sites that explain it in detail
http://www.oneworldinternetcafe.com/bett...
http://www.bettysplendens.com/articles/c...

Hope that helps
Good luck

EB
You shouldn't put the male and female in until they have been conditioned. Place the female next to the male with both of them in different tanks. Do this for about a week and if the male establishes a "bubble nest", then they're most likely ready to mate. Make sure they can see each other when they are in the separate tanks. If you want to know more, I suggest asking MagicMan. He is where I got this information from.
um..maybe go to like Petco or Petsmart and ask the people there. they might know??
Sometimes bettas only mate at a certain season
And if the female does not want to breed then the male will kill her. Thats probably what happened to you
The male will attack the female if she isn't full of eggs and ready to spawn. Like a few other said you need to condition them for 2 weeks prior to breeding. You have to feed them foods rich of protein. You will have to wait for your female to heal before trying to breed her again. You need to buy some antibiotics to treat her with to keep her fins from getting infected. Both fish will show signs of being ready to breed. You just have to know what to look for. Do some research on them, there is tons of info on the net.

Plecs feeding? veggies?

What veggies will plecs eat and how should I prepare them?
I also have a molly, 2 xray tetras, 1 flame tetra and a guppy.what veggies will they eat how should I give it to them?
Answers:
Plecos will eat thinly sliced cucumbers, just drop them to the bottom of the tank as you would an algae wafer. You can also purchase fruit clips from pet stores which suction cup to the side of the tank. Be sure to remove any veggie waste after about an hour. As for the guppies and tetras, just stick to blood worms or black worms. If you really want to feed veggies to your guppy, you can try boiled peas.
The Pleco will eat almost anything. Any aquatic plants you have, it will eat. The best things to give them are zucchini, cucumber, and lettuce. If you give it lettuce or zucchini, boil it first to soften it up. Mollies will eat algae, and neither of them will really go after any veggies, they would prefer some frozen bloodworms instead.

Pleco won't eat!!?

I have a pleco I got from someone else, we've had him a week now and I haven't seen him eat once. We put down some cucumber and some potatoes and both were untouched.
We also put some algae wafers in but he doesn't touch them and the other fish eat them.
We have 2 x Dwarf Gourami, 4x Swordtails, 2x clown loaches as well as the pleco. Also it seems one of the Swordtails might be pregnant as she has a very swollen stomach, What should we do?
Answers:
they are algae eaters and clean the sides and bottoms of the tanks and any uneaten food in the gravel, they come out at night, and do this so dont worry everything is ok
most Plecos eat at night and mine eats the algae in my tank, he might be eating and you just don't notice it.
Possible solutions
Ask the previous owners what they fed
or wait until he eventually eats.. algae, wafer, or cucumbers etc.
You aren't likely to ever catch the pleco eating because they are nocturnal and even at night, they will freeze at the first sign of motion. I usually just drop a slice of cucumber in the tank and wait, in a few days it's usually gone. If it looks as though he's not touching it after a few days, try boiled zucchini. I've heard of a lot of pleco owners using that. In the meantime, don't worry. Plecos usually can manage for weeks or longer on just the algae that grows inside a tank, depending, of course on the size of the pleco and the tank.
Try going to www.plecofanatics.com for more help.
Also, if your swordtail is pregnant, you should see a dark reddish area right behind her silvery other organs. if you look closely, you'll even be able to see the babies' eyes. The babies are most likely to survive if you can set up another tank for her to give birth in, and for them to grow up in. If you can do this, make sure to put in plenty of thick leafy plants and take her out as soon as it looks like she's done birthing her babies. if it isn't possible for you to get another tank to put her in, i reccommend at least getting a mesh breeder net, and a few fake plants covering the bottom third of the net at least until the babies are born and momma moves back into the normal tank.
Good luck, and email me with any more questions.
Most pleco are night time feeders. Drop in the food before lights out. Some time with hard food they will often wait until the food softens. (Some people blanc vegs before throwing them in.) Also he might be eating left over food, or eat algae at night. There are a lot of kinds of pleco. Most are omnivore scavengers, and many will eat meaty foods by preference. Personally I wouldn't worry unless all the algae vanishes in your tank, and you see him actively feeding during the day. Just throw in zucchini slices, broccoli stems, or algae wafers once a week or so before lights out for a balanced diet.
Personally I feed my plecos broccoli stems, and carrots as they sink. (Note I have a clown pelco who likes hard food like carrots.) They also get a lot of algae due to massive amounts of natural light, as well missed algae flakes.
plecos are night time feeders plus bottom feeders plus they hide alot so unless u watch it all the time u will probably not see it eating.

Pleco With Goldfish?

I got a pleco about 4 months ago from petsmart %26 I have it in the tank with 2 goldfish. I've just read that plecos are tropical fish? He seems to be doing great in the tank no fin rott or anything. So is it safe to keep him in the tank with the goldfish?
Answers:
Hi Dano, The two types of fish are not compatible, not the reason of temperature as most people think because Goldfish are pretty liberal about that-the problem with almost all Pleco/sucker/algae eater/catfish types is they are nocturnal %26 often get a taste for the Goldfishes slime coats while both you %26 the Goldfish are asleep so you are not aware of any damage until it is quite advanced. Ideally Goldfish should only live with other Goldfish of similar body shape %26 size.
In my opinion I would suggest not to keep them together as Plecos tend to suck on fish slimes produce by the fish and that the Pleco will suck on your Goldfish's body and it will cause injury to your Goldfish..
Mine are together
As the pleco grows, it might make a snack of the goldfish. Plecos grow several feet long, so be prepared for a huge tank. Tropical can refer to any freshwater fish really, it doesn't mean they need a certain temperature. Plecos are lake fish and they don't need a heater.
Yes, Plecos are tropical fish and they do best in a water temp. of 72-86 degrees so I recommend getting a heater sometime. Well, young plecos are not territorial and should leave your goldfish alone as long as they are getting proper care. Now adult Plecos are territorial and may suck on your Goldfish's body taking off the slime coat which can cause injury. But if your Pleco has plenty of hiding places, food, and space then it will probably leave your goldfish alone and you shouldn't have to worry about it ever attacking your goldfish.
ok plecos should not be with gold fish but they will live fine ive had plecos with goldfish for years and ther fine the gold fish might pick on him a bit but give him hiding spaces and he will be fine

PLEASE!! fish with swelling eye!?

my friend wants to know why her fish's eye keeps getting bigger and white. it's like popping out of it's head. it's kinda gross. how do you fix it, how did it start and what the heck is it!?
Answers:
That's an infection called pop eye actually. It's a bacterial infection that often starts in the fishes liver. It usually responds well to a good antibiotic such as Maracyn TC or ampicillin. Just treat as directed on the package.
MM
It is a common infection in fish. Your local pet store will have the medication to help the fish. It must be used before the eye ruptures.
Tis popeye. It started from as a fungal problem. you are probably going to want to buy some meds for it. You'd might want to pick it up and act fast before it gets worse.

Please offer general advice for an african cichlid tank.?

I purchased a rather small 28 gallon bow front fish tank. I am sold on african cichlids but I've yet to add ANYTHING to the tank. What type of rocks, plants, cichlids should I look into? What can I expect and are their any general problems with this type of fish?
Answers:
with a 28 i'd go with dwarf mbuna or go with lake tanganyikans.
Say if you want more fish, i'd find a pair of neolamprologus brichardi and let them start a colony (juveniles will take care of their younger siblings). Or you could always go with shell dwellers from Lake Tanganyika. n. ocellatus, brevi, multifasciatus are all fine.
With dwarf mbuna, you can go with demasoni, although i have to warn you that they are a bit on the aggressive side and i wouldn't recommend housing them with other peaceful mbuna. You could also do kenyi/lombardoi, saulosi. You might get away with rusty cichlids and yellow labs since they are peaceful.
Whatever you get, make sure you have a good ratio of male to females. 1 male to 3 or 4 females
Avoid: Chipoke, Auratus and Johannii. They are just too aggressive and will either terrorize your other fish or kill them.
Before adding any fish, make sure to cycle your tank. Fill it with water and let it run for a few days so that the nitrates/nitrites/ammonia levels all go down. While you're doing that, do your research and visit some fish stores look at the fish and just come back and google them all.
No plants, they will be eaten by the fish especially mbuna. (unless of course you use synthetic then that's up to you how to decorate your tank.) Go with finer substrate like sand or crushed coral. Mbuna do like to sift through them and It helps bring the pH up needed for the rift lake cichlids. Rocks it's up to you what to decorate it with. You can make it look as natural as their environment and cover the whole back with layered rocks/stones.
Good Luck!
PS. 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon can NOT be applied to cichlids. Everything will go wrong. With cichlids, you have to base the amount of fish you can put there by temperment, size of territory they like to occupy, whether they are open water swimmers or if they like to stick by the rocks.
I had these fish a few years ago, they are fascinating fish to watch and mine use to dig tunnels in the gravel , throw rocks at the glass and were very entertaining. Just be careful as they can be agressive and not everyones cup of tea. I found my females would get really stressed and spend their time hiding from the males so make sure you have lots of hideholes and rocks , purchased from the aquarium shop as you cant just put any old type in. I just went to the acquarium shop and took their advice i cant remember what types they were but the best one was a little orange guy i also started with a small tank but then transferred them to a 3ft tank which he loved and he grew to a beautiful fish Enjoy!

Please Help, Betta Fish turning colors !?

I just changed my beta fish's water and now his body is turning like a light dirty gold color. He is a dark red color. Can you please tell me what is wrong with him and how i can make him better ?
Answers:
Don't worrie about it is normal some betta fish can change color . i know what i'm talking about because i been using betta fish almost all my life. But to maintain you betta healthy you may want to buy water drops for bettas. Don't worry about it ok, trust me because i been having bettas since i was like 2 years old. i use to live in the dominican republic and i use to catch bettas fish in the lakes or (lagunas). don't worry about it is all normal. right now i have 4 bettas and all for over a year.
this is a pic of my yellow betta, my favorite one: http://aycu08.webshots.com/image/24207/2...
If he swim normal that mean he is not sick.
did you remove the chlorine from the water before you added it to the tank? Also, was the new water the same temp as the water he already had?
A rapid color loss in colour in Beta's is usually caused by some sort of external factor, such as bacteria or other toxins.
You should test your fishes water right away to ensure that the water levels are all correct. The vast majority of fish illnesses are caused by something out of wack in the water, and since you just changed his water this is most likely the cause.
Colour Loss in Beta's can also be caused by cold temperatures in its water. So check the Temp as well, it should be about 80 degrees Fereinheit
This may not be your fault either, some fish are just more prone to illness.
I hope that some of this helps and that your little guy feels better soon.
How long have you had him? It's common for bettas to change colours as they age. Even if he isn't that long, there are strains of bettas known as "marble bettas", which change their colours regularly throughout their lifetimes.
If you want to be safe, you can get hold of a test kit and test for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. The ammonia and nitrite readings should be at 0, and the nitrates should be less than 20 ppm if possible.
However, if he's not displaying any signs of illness (change in activity levels, clamped fins, physical growths/injuries, loss of appetite, etc) I wouldn't worry about it.
That's NOT good! Make sure his water temperature is 75-80 Fahrenheit and that his bowl is over 2.5 gallons. Read this article, it deals with betta care in their natural environment and how to reduce their stress that way http://www.fish-care.net/bettafishcare.s... there's a free email course too.

Please help!! I'm trying to set my aquarium up with live plants?

I just purchased two packages from walmart. One is the miniture lily and one is the Aponogeton. I have let them sitin a jar of water for two days now. I just put them in my betta's aquarium. All of the bulbs float except for one lily and one aponogeton bulb. My question is, how long will it be before they sprout, are they supposed to be floating? Is it harmful that my betta is pushing on them? And is the water lily going to be good for my aquarium? it's a dwarf, so I'm thinking if I put one plant of it in the back corner and prune it, it should be fine. I don' thtink the leaves come to the surface all the time. (plus, are the aponogetons good for my betta to rest on? that's why I bought them). Well, even if they don't sprout, at least it's something for my betta to do now :D (I'm not sure if my other question actually posted or not, sorry for the repeat if it did!)
Answers:
I just bought 2 of them myself about 2 months back
no they won't hurt your betta
as for sprouding, they usually start after about 15-20 days
the one that fell already to the ground will definately start to sproud, the ones that float, wait about 3 weeks, if they still haven't sunken to the bottom then you have to trow them out
I had 2 bulbs, one started sprout the other one I through out after a month
Live plants are very good for your tank, and a betta loves to rest on them, don't use plastic plants in a betta's tank
Hope that helps
Good luck

EB
Stick with plastic plants (thier easy to maintain) the live ones will just be trouble.
you can put it in your betta as long as its a tank with light..the plants need light because of photosythesis..
The bulbs are floating because they are not water logged yet. Try tapping on them once in a while and they may sink.
Both plants will send leaves to the surface. The aponogenton will have small leaves so as long as you have a 10+ gal it should be fine. If conditions are right it will flower - they look great. The lily can be trained to stay short by prunning as you said.
As far as sprouting that depends on too many factors(CO2, amonia, lighting, substrate, temperature,etc...). If you have a good setup for them you should see sprouts in about 2 days. I have some that are just sprouting after 6 months.
The bulbs shouldn't hurt your beta either.

Please help! Guppies dying... somethings wrong... need serious help! Please try to answer for 2 points!?

I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm spazzing... but, I almost am.
I've had a guppy tank for about a month; and as far as I knew it was pretty cycled before I added fish. I had 4 adult fancy guppies (2 females and 2 males) in a 5 gallon aquarium, which I'll be upgrading soon.
After a weekend gone and unable to feed them, I came back to find both males dead. The females were very pregnant and the next day, one had babies. A few days later the other one did as well. However... on my blue and orange one, I noticed a red-ish stain around her abdomen (her butt area, I guess.) It definantly didn't look normal... but she was acting fine. It seemed to get a little bigger and I noticed it slightly around the gills. Then, my second female got it and died that night (yesterday.) The blue and orange slowly began to die so I euthanized her.
Now, I'm very nervous for the lives of the remaining fish. SOMETHING happened and is in the water... though its very hard to tell what. How do I fix it?
Answers:
What you need to do right now is doing a 50 % waterchange right away, because your ammonia is way of the chart
It's suppose to be at '0'
As for what you should get right now?
Get at least a 10 gallon tank with heater and a sponge filter right away
Fill it up with water and add conditioner as recommended, and let it sit for at least 2-3 hours
Also add 10 tablespoons of aquarium salt to the new tank when you set it up
After that scoop all your fish out of the old tank and acclimate them to the new water, but don't add the old tank water to your new tank
Also for bacteria just take the gravel from the old tank and put it in there, as well as squeezing out the carbon cartridge, that will help to jumpstart the cycle in it
There is also bacteria you can buy for the tank
You might still loose fish, since they have been to long in the old tank, but if you're lucky you can save some with that setup
Do partial waterchanges of at least 10-15% daily on the new tank to control the ammonia
The red you see on your guppy's is ammonia poisening
That's actually how i was able to save some fish, when I didn't know anything about ammonia and stuff

hope that helps
Good luck

Call your vet, or whereever you bought the fish.
I'd talk to an aquarium person, or fish-vet (if there is one)
maybe try getting another kind of fish? I'm sorry. Or you could get a new tank or filter, and be careful, and moniter the water.
Good luck! :( And I'm sorry for your loss.
You might want to purchase a test kit to test the water and maybe talk to an associate at pet smart or pet co.
the males just die after mating
i dont know what was wrong with the females
that is wierd
i hope the other guppies are okay!!
have you checked the levels in your tank, nitrite amonia and nitrate,if your levels are high this could of resulted in your fishes deaths.
it sounds like they had a disease, check your levels with a test kit and then if possible post the results
Ok, test the water. Chances are something is bad with the water quality. An ammonia spike, maybe? If your water is bad, quickly remove 25% of the water and replace with room-temp, de-cholrinated (sorry I can't spell that) water. This should help the levels go down.
If you don't have a test kit, bring a sample of your water to your local pet store. They usually provide free water tests to customers. If not, buy a test kit for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and possibly pH. If they do provide a test and something is wrong, they should be able to give you a product to use or atleast advice! Either way, BUY A TEST KIT!
If your water is fine, then one of your fishes must of caught an illness and made the others sick. I am sorry I don't know what else could be wrong, I hope I helped!

READ THIS: Your temp is too high! Guppies like a temp of 68 degrees faren. to 79 degrees faren. Also, your pH is too high! Guppies prefer a pH of 7.0-7.4!
It might be a bacterial infection caused by a build up of waste or something else in the water. Try using Melafix, which is an antibacterial remedy commonly sold in stores like PetsMart or Petco. It says it treats open red sores, fin and tail rot, eye cloud, pop eye, body slime, mouth fungus, and open body wounds.
I hope the babies are okay.
It my recent experiences with pet store guppies most of them died a few days after purchase.
I set up a 55g tank with guppies and mollies, bought a good chunk of 4 males and 9 females. After the 1st 4 days all the males were dead and 2 of the females were dead.
I talked to a guy who breeds show guppies and he told me that the fancy guppy line is basically played out and is a weak easily killed fish. It is so inbreed that the fabled toughness of the guppy is gone and is now just a myth. They need to be treated very delicately.
I did find that by keeping 1 male to a 5gtank and feeding him top quality frozen and flake food I could toughen them up and keep them alive in a community tank. So I have 2 fancy guppy males that thrive in my 55g, a yellow cobra and a sunset guppy. They love life with their 9 females. hehe

Please help my goldfish?

i already asked this but please i need more answers. my goldfish just sits upsright on the bottom of the tank i have two other fish and they are totally fine. he swims for a when disturbed but then goes back dow to the bottom im worried he might be dying please help
Answers:
Test for ammonia nitrites and nitrates of the water give those reading and i would be more than happy to help. Also post what size tank, ALL the fish you have in the tank, what filter is on the tank, how much do you feed them, anything you can think of. So if you dont already have a test kit to test your water, go get one test the water and post more info. The only thing i can say that may help ios do a 25%-30% water change with dechlorinated water. Feel free to email me and id be happy to help when you have more info.
This really isn't enough information. Can you give us any other physical symptoms such as ragged tail, white spots, cottony patches, red patches, sores, clamped fins, etc.?
If you are refering to at night then it is COMPLETELY normal. I have a shovelnose catfish that just sits on a piece of driftwood all day long. He almost looks fake he moves so little. But as soon as the light turns off hes out and about (he's nocturnal). Your goldfish could also just be skidish and may want to hide. If you don't have a cave or plants i recomend getting them as they might help him come out more
Do you see your other fish attacking him or what kind of fish do you have with him? Because if you have tropical fish with him maybe that's why he does that because of the water is different.
Hope this helps let me know what kind of fish you have with him.
i use to have goldfish but gave them to my bf.
anyways, goldfish, they like to lay on the bottom of the tank from time to time, just wait a little more and let c if he changes. it might also b that he wants to hide, try placing some kind of decoration inside ur aquarium in which he can hide.
Try Contacting a Vet and tell him whats wrong. he may know whats up.
Since you had already before problems with constipation, I assume it's constipation again

Please help my betta's eyes are slightly larger than normal?

what does this mean?
I just put him in a freshly cleaned tank new filter rocks fake plants...he is antisocial now and hides out in his little house...if he see's me he gets scared or puffs his face up at me...his body looks fine...he is eating okay i guess...is this okay...i have betta fix should i give him that? please help i don't want him to be sick.thank you
Answers:
Being put in a completely new tank can be stressful for certain bettas, depending on their individual temperament. Particularly jumpy bettas get nervous when their environment has been rearranged or changed drastically. He's just settling into his new place and rather overwhelmed.
However, it's nothing to worry about. As long as he is flaring and eating, and not displaying any lethargy or physical damage, he is fine. It's good that you gave him a house to hide in. A little privacy will help reduce the stress he's feeling and make him feel safer.
Don't medicate with anything, or do a water change. You should never put chemicals into your betta's water unless you know they're absolutely necessary. Likewise, never medicate your fish unless you're sure of which disease he has. It will only stress him out further and can lead to a host of other problems. Instead, watch him carefully for the next couple of days to see if he displays any change in activity levels or physical change. If he really is sick, the symptoms will show up within the next few days.
Leaving him for a couple of days more will be fine, but if you really want to help him out, you can go to your local pet store and get some Black Water Extract. Kent makes a good brand. It creates similar water conditions to that of the betta's natural habitat, making him feel more comfortable and less stressed out.
when i had my betta he did the same thing, he is either just trying to get used to his new enviroment or somehow got sick. little question, did you wash everything, including the rocks and plants? cause even those can make any fish sick.
hmmm,...yea it probably is just him trying to get used to the enviroment, all i can say is, if it gets worse, ask a fish doctor person[haha] if they know anything about whats going on

hi,
if its eyes are larger than normal and kind of have a film over them, it might have pop-eye which can be caused by stress and other things too. over crowding a tank can caus this too. i have used in the past an item called Melafix that i bought at petsmart and it treats a wide variety of things such as pop-eye and fin repair and mouth fungus and such. you usually use it once a day for seven days and they should be better by then. it doesnt cost too much and its in a blue bottle. good luck! happy fish keeping.
It definately sounds like popeye

i have molly fish in a 10 gallon tank what should the temperature be?
Answers:
78 F would be ideal
mid 20's or high 70's is ideal (about 78 or 26)
The temperature should be between 70-80 degrees. buy a small heater. these are tropical fish they like warmer waters.
72 you have the same tank as me and fish

Please help algae?

I have a 30 gallon tank with a 60 gallon filter. I have 1 glass fish, 2 cory's, 1 male mollie, 5 neon tetras, and I am not sure how many guppies (maybe 12, left from the last fry). I am getting alot of brown colored algae on the (fake) plants and I am not sure how to get rid of it. Spraying them during water change use to work and when that didnt work I tired using a toothbrush but that doesnt work all that well. Is there anything I can use to help with removing this algae. I never had a problem with it before so I am really unsure what to do.
Answers:
get a simple algae eater or golden dojo. they love algae. you could also get some freshwater snails. most pet stores will have some variety of them
remove the fish and like pick them off wit tweezers? my friend has those things on their tank and it doesnt bother them so i guess u can just leave it alone

Please don't think i'm stupid or something but do fish see their own reflections in the glass or do they see u

see sometimes they just float there by the glass like they are seeing and maybe even studying themselves like they truly see a reflection BUT then you can walk by and they swim away like they're scared sooo i really can't figure out if they see outside ,see a reflection or if its both
Answers:
They see a bit of both. It's like looking out a closed window. You can see part of your reflection, and part of you. If you look at them at their level, you see through it, but you also see a reflection.
They see outside.
They can see through the glass. They might be just floating there because there's not much else to do and they kinda "zoned out". Humans do that too. I'll just sit on the bed and end up staring at the curtain or something just thinking about stuff, but then when someone walks in and sees me, they think I'm crazy lol.
Remember though, most fish, like goldfish, only have an attention span of 1-5 seconds. So they probably swim away because they totally forgot you were even there and you caught them off guard when you walked by.
both but u more
i think the fish see me because the glass r transparent... d ba?
Sometimes the fish see you, sometimes they see their reflection. It depends what angle they are on.
If you go to their level, and look where they are looking, you can sometimes see their reflections.
By the way why did you ask this question?? I am not trying to be rude, I am just wondering.
Hope I helped,
:)
they see outside, my fish always come up to me when im near tank
Yes sometimes they see their own reflections.

Play sand for sale at Home Depot?

i went to home depot the other i was thinking hmm...my cichlids would really like sand instead of gravel..they are saling a 50 pound for $4.00..
heres what i nned to know?
1.should i get it
2.how do i wash it
3.how should i add it
4.does it affect the water in anyway
5.could i add it while having fish in the tank?
thanks in advance ppl.
Answers:
I had good results using SILICA SAND instead, which is basically the same thing but without the metallic elements that make "play"sand brown. Silica sand is callibrated for size of particles, I remember # 32, that size or slightly larger is good. Still, you should rinse it thoughly in a big pail and stirring it constantly under overflowing running water, until the water is no longer cloudy. That way you're left with the particles that will stay on the tank bottom, without the suspendable dust. It might be wise to boil and then cool and rinse any sand or any stone you plan to put into your tank.
Changing the type of gravel or sand in your tank might best be done when you clean your tank, otherwise, keep in mind, removing your fish is very stressfull for them, they don't know whats going on, all they think is they might be getting caught to be eaten, so they'll be scared for their lives.
!st of all, I personally wouldn't put that kind of sand in there but if you do the fish have to be removed while you do it.
Hi, I've never kept them, but this link says sand is best for cichlids and shows you how. They look like beautiful fish, congratulations!
You should take the fish out before cIeaning. If you feed them first, it's less stressful for them.
Get 2 bags of sand, take it home, put it in a large bucket, swirl it around to loosen up all the dust. Continue this until all the sand is clean. The fish have to be removed to add the sand. Turn off your filter as well. Dump the sand into the water. Wait for it to settle before turning the filter on again and before adding fish. This sand will not affect the water in any way. If it was made out of coral, it would increase the pH, but it is made out of a material that has no effect on pH.
Nosoop4u
If you have any more questions, email me and I will help you out.
The problem with play sand is it packs too tight and does not allow any water or air thru this causes the growth of anarobic bacteria.(This is the bad kind ) IT will after time with the build up of fish waste start releasing sulphur dioxide which will deplete the water of oxygen and kill your fish. If you are committed to using it you need to stir up the sand about every 3 days or so to keep it from forming these bacteria . A sign that the anarobic bacteria have taken hold is that the sand will be black on the bottom of the tank where there is no air of water movement and it will have a foul odor
Sand box sand is sterilized, but it may contain additives that will either effect your water parameters or hurt your fish. You should always make sure that you know what's in the sand.
Other people have given tips on cleaning and adding it, but I will add that if you get some Malaysian Burrowing snails (Melanoides tuberculata) also called Trumpet snails, they will dig into the sand and eat any food there, also aerating the sand. They won't eat plants unless there is no other food, but they are asexual and will reproduce a lot in a very short time.

Platy Sex change?

Can they change sex . . .ie: if there are only females in a tank, will one turn male? I have heard of some species doing this but i think it was frogs
Answers:
not usually in platies.
While yes it can happen like in SW wrasse species, i believe it only happens in one species of FW.
Swordtails... older females who can no longer have the hormones to breed, will turn into a "male" without the sword. they will develop a gonopduim and breed with females.
Thats the only freswwater fish that i know of, prehaps a few species of african cichlids.
impossible, it was a lie, you cant change sex without surgery %26 a doctor wont do surgery on a fish

Platy question?

does anyone know if dwarf platys jump?
Answers:
Yes, they jump out of their tanks all the time at work.
yes they do. All varieties of platy jump. keep the lids covered, you may be able to keep them without the lids if you have plants that cover the majority of the surface area, such as water lettuce. Although, this is not always advisable since they can still jump out.

Platy Growth Rate?

I have 10 platy fry and i am just wondering what is the platy growth rate, please could you give me links or knowledge of how long it will take for the platy to grow full size?
Could you tell me the growth of the platies through different stages of age?
Thanks Danny
P.s Best answer 10 points!!
Answers:
I've raised platies and other livebearers for about 30 years. They will be large enough to be with other fish and not eaten within 3-5 weeks. Depends on the water conditions and the food. Feed them well with high quality foods, provide them with a clean healthy environment, the will grow faster and larger.

I am not a big specialist of that question but believe:
- adult size around 1 - 1.5inch
- size + colours should be reached at around 8 weeks old
I hope that helps
Regards
Julien
normally fishes grow their whole life.
platies are sexually mature when they are three months old, but they are still rather small at this point (3 cm, that is 1.18 inches). they achieve their "normal" size, that is about 5 cm (2 inches) for males and 6 cm (2.36 inches) for females at the age of 5-6 months depending on the water temperature and amount of food they can get.
slightly higher temperatures boost the fish metabolism and fishes age faster because of that.
lack of food in the infancy leads to smaller sizes in the adulthood, this is true for all vertebrates.
be aware though, that there are many hybrids between platys and swordtails. the hybrids are generally larger than platies. they will achieve the size of standard platies at 4 months already and looking a bit shorter but higher and wider than swordtails in the age of 6 months.
Once swords, mollies and platies are about 3 to 4 months old the males become quite evident by their pointed anal fins. They become sexually mature at 3 to 6 months. They grow at different rates so growth and maturity is very dependent upon water conditions, feeding, water temperature, population of the tank, genetics, future adult size, etc, so there really isn't a specific 'growth rate' estimation I can give you. Even if you gave me all the information about all these factors I just couldn't do it. You will just have to watch them and determine their sex when they are ready to, um, "show you". ;-)

Platy fry's growth?

ok i have a fish tank thats around 25 gallons (weird shape) its been up for about 7 montsh now after i cleaned it and its doing really well. Currently i have 2 platys and 2 fish i dont know the name of :). Well about a month ago my friends platy had fry the over took her tank so i took 4 from her. 3 of them died in the first week but one survied! and has been still doing good for a month now. But it seems lik him/her is now growing! I mean i know he has grown some cuasehe has got all his/her color now. But not much size.. i want him/her to grow up so it can have fry with my orange/black platy :). Why wont it grow! My platy is pregnant for the first time too and i dont wnt the same thing to happen to her fry!
Answers:
Factors that affect growth rates are ,cleanliness of the water:quality of food; and temperature.
Change 20 to 25 % of the water once or twice a week.
Keep the filters clean.
Try to find some forms of live foods, both plant and animal.
Keep the tank temperature at 78 or 79 degrees F.
All this should begin as soon as possible after the fry are dropped.
The fact that three out of four fry died makes me believe that you do not do frequent water changes and that the Nitrates and possibly also Ammonia numbers are high for your tank.
Also you should try to find out the correct name of your other fish,it's important to know what sort of fish you are trying to take care of.

Platy breeding??

I have a male and female dwarf platy in a 5 gallon tank with a betta and 2 otto cats. will they breed? i really want them to. all my riends with fishtanks really want a couple but cant find them any where. so if you have any advise on getting them to breed PLEASE help!!!
Answers:
Platies will breed, yes. That's almost all they do! LOL The betta will eat the babies, though (as will the platies), so make sure you remove the babies as soon as you see them and put them in a seperate tank or in a breeding net. There isn't anything really special to make a platy breed. Sometimes bumping the temp helps, but they'll breed on their own with no help from you as long as they are both sexually mature.
Your tank is over stocked, if you want them to breed get a 10 gallon tank and put them there, once they lay eggs remove the father and mother and raise the fry.
If you aren't familiar with breeding fish the fry will die after a couple of tires you will get it.

Platie fry?

I platie fry had between 40 and 60 babies the other day, wednsday, I wasnt expecting so many, I only have a spare 20 gallon (set up and cycled with only 2 apple snails in it, I am planing on puting about 10 in there. Is it true that bigger fish will eat babies? If so, do i just take them out the breeder box and put them in the tank with the big fish or do i put one of the big fish in the box with the babies?
thansk
Answers:
Yes platies can reproduce like rabbits, And have alot of fry (babies) I would suggest asking the pet shop if they want the fry or they may give you a small amount of cash, Or store credit, But if you dont want to do that then the babies provide protein for larger fish,Tasty. I would suggest picking the 10 most heathlyest ones and puting them in your 20 gal with a sponge filter, The power filter will suck them up.
~ GG
It is true. Bigger fish will eat the babies. If you can separate them, it is best, but if you keep them in a tank with bigger fish (or turtles) make sure you provide the fry with some nice floating plants or something to hide in.
Yes, bigger fish WILL eat the babies. Keep them safe by setting up a net in the main tank, or set up another tank, exclusively for the fry. Don't put gravel or plants in the fry tank. Only put a sponge filter in the fry tank. Don't put ANYTHING in a net.
Hope that helps!
Good luck!

Plants not growing? Asking again!?

Problem: Bought anacharis and planted them to fish tank a week ago but there are not growing and look unhealthy (yellow leaves, leaves falling off, etc
Facts
-15 gallon fish tank
-Had tank for a year with fish
-15 watts fluorescent lamp made by All-Glass Aquarium
-I have 4 goldfish (tank overstock but goldfish were a gift. I didnt buy them. dont blame me)
-2 apple snails
-Do water changes weekly 20-30 percent.
-Filter for 30 gallons with CARBON
-NO ALGAE the entire time I had the tank.
-Light ONLY received from lamp. No window where I have the tank.
-Turning the lights for 10-14 hours daily AFTER getting the anacharis.
-Used fertilizer YESTERDAY, no effect.
-Water is room temp or cold (goldfish)
Hypothesis
-Activated carbon sucking nutrients / lack of iron
-Light not strong enough
-Not enough CO2
Other facts
- Answers must be from ppl who actually and successfully planted in their aquariums. Why? Im getting too many answers that contradict themselves. I dont know what to believe
Answers:
Thanks for the added info. Now that your tank size is specified, I would go with not enough light and/or iron as the major problems.
The fertilizer you bought should have iron as one of the ingredients, so that will help in the long term, but you won't see any results in a day.
If you can, I'd try upgrading the lighting system. It would help just to add a second hood of the size you already use, although this may make opening the tank for feeding more of a problem. Make the new tube one for plant growth or a full spectrum to be sure you're supplying the plants with the proper wavelengths for photosynthesis. Beyond that, there are double-tube fluorescents you can buy, or you may want to switch to a T-5 or compact fluorescent which will significantly increase your light intensity.
The other choice would be to select plants that have a lower lighting requirement. Three that I would strongly recommend are Java moss, Java fern, and Anubias: http://faq.thekrib.com/plant-list.html...
See below for info on plants and mineral deficiencies and their symptoms - the first mentions lack of nitrate as a cause of yellowing, but with 4 goldfish in a 15 gallon tank, I doubt this is your problem:
It looks like everything is good I think your Hypthesis is about for Not enough CO2 or Activated carbon, Nutrients or lack of Iron. yellow leaves is usually the sign of lacking Nutrients or CO2, other than that I think it could be shock. Also your snails or fish might be eating it.
well it seems like you have everything you need for a good grow maybe with sometime you'll get it
When you take medication is it instant and don't the results build over time?
Keep giving the fertilzer and next time I would go with a bamboo plant because they are cheaper and easier to replace. You have way too many goldfish and so they are tearing your plant apart. I would try getting some more light and give the fertilizer two times a week. Add a bubbler if you can it helps the plants alot, I would think that you are getting enought light.
In the end I would increase the food dosage, get a bubbler and maybe find a way to give away your fish. If they are healthy and good looking some pet stores or maybe some of your friends will take the other 3.
Hope I could help!
P.s. don't remove your carbon or your fish will die! The fish need clean ammonia and nitrate free water more than you plants like I said increase iron dosage and see what happens!
All of those things you mention could be the problem, but before you spend a bunch of money, look up the temperature range for Anacharis, plants are really temperature sensitive.
4 Goldfish should produce tons of CO2,so I wouldn't buy a CO2 system.
The carbon might be removing Nitrates and Phosphates if you are changing it monthly, but I don't think it will remove iron.
Here's something to try: get a piece of nice driftwood, find some Java Fern, gently attach the plant to the driftwood.(I use bands made by cutting the feet out of discarded pantyhose, but any thing that's very gentle will work.)
One more thing,I've got a couple of planted tanks, and I've kept fish for nearly 50 years, and I've never seen Anacharis actually grow anywhere but in my outdoor "ponds"(horse watering tanks, buried in the ground.) So don't be too discouraged with your first attempt.
Don't blame the carbon, it has nothing to do with it. With this new information regarding tank size, the answer is fairly obvious, your plants aren't getting enough light. One watt per gallon from an incandescent light is nothing! Get a 30 watt fluorescent light, problem solved. Also, stop adding fertilizer, the fertilizer is going to lead to algae, and you wouldn't want to break your algae-less streak...
Nosoop4u
EDIT: First of all, a bubbler will reduce the amount of CO2 the plants recieve, therefore, killing them. Secondly, Bamboo isn't an aquatic plant, and will soon rot in the tank, fouling the water.
EDIT 2: If you don't have enough money to support the plants, just get rid of them, or you will continue to have dying filth in your tank.
you can't expect a fertilizer to work in a period of 1 day, that's impossible
you need to keep your water clean, that means 25% weekly partial waterchanges with a gravelsiphon
The carbon has nothing to do with it
Give the fertilizer time to work, at least a week before you will see any changes and improvements
Also leave the light on for 10-12 hours during the day and turn it off for 12-14 hours at nights
you could als give hornwort and cabomba plants a try

Hope that helps
Good luck

well i dont have a succeful planted aquarium but i do have a somewhat succesful aquarium. i recently got a plant too, not sure what kind but its broad leaved and pretty so yea... what i did as soon as i got home is i putt it in my aquarium in a small pot with gravel in it, i knew that some how my fish were going to uproot it and i would never put it back and the plant would die, or the fish would eat the roots.
you could have bought a tropical water plant, but you have coldwater fish, look up some coldwater plants.
the goldfish could be producing to much waste, and thus killing the plant.
they could be eating the roots, i have herd of incedints were goldfish (and koi) just randomly shredding peoples plants...

oh and im glad you put all of your tank info, no one does that around here

Plants and aquarium salt?

I'm new to live plants. I want to use aquarium salt in my livebearer tanks, but it will kill the plants in a short time right? Are there any plants that can withstand the salt?
Answers:
Most aquatic plants will tolerate the amount of salt used on a regular basis in freshwater tanks (1 tablespoon per 5 gallons). Some will tolerate even more salinity. This link gives a list with symbols for various environmental requirements, and one symbol indicates brackish/alkaline conditions: http://faq.thekrib.com/plant-list.html...
Another article: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/brackishsubwe...
There are plants in the ocean -- so, surely there must be some plants that can withstand the salt -- ask the people at your local friendly aquarium place -- surely, they'll have the answer . . . it's their job (and, if they tell you something, and the plant dies, anyway . . . you could feasibly return it, under the warranty of merchantability . . . look that up online).
be careful, the two do not combine very well and i learned it from experience, i had a sick oscar and i was healing him with some salt and plants in the tank. well he didnt make it but if you do a good amount of water changes the plant comes back to life as quick as it dies.
Some plants, like Java Moss, Java Fern, Hornwort, Amazon Sword, and Annubias, tend to do rather well in salted freshwater to brackish type tanks.

Plants + Activated Carbon = Dead plants?

I have a fish tank with anacharis under a fluorescent 15 watt lamp The plants dont look that good. I bought fertilizer yesterday and so far I havent seen any improvement. Do you think that the activated carbon inside my power filter is sucking all the nutrients + the fertilizer out of the water thus starving my plants?
Answers:
It's hard to say what the problem might be without knowing more about your tank.
To begin with, you mention that you have a 15 watt lamp, but what's the size of your tank? Given that you should have at least 3 watts per gallon for "high" lighting, is it a 5 gallon tank? If so, that might be okay. If it's a 55 gallon, you're seriously under the amount of wattage you need.
Along with the wattage, what's the spectrum? Plants use a little light from all wavelengths, but need more in the 450-500 and 680-700 namometer range for photosynthesis (red and blue colors). If tour fluorescents produce light mostly in other wavelengths, it doesn't do your plants any good no matter how high the wattage.
How heavily stocked is the tank? If you have enough fish, they will be providing most of the nitrate, phosphate, and carbon dioxide needed by your plants already, but there are trace elements like iron which is usually deficient in aquaria that would be needed. If the tank is heavily planted, you may need to supplement CO2 as well (also, if the tank is heavily planted, light may not reach lower leaves, and these will die).
At any rate, a day isn't enough time to see any recovery of the plants from fertilizer - this is something you may only see in new growth. It's possible that the carbon would be adsorbing some of the fertilizer ingredients, especially elements that are metals like iron. If you don't have a specific need for the carbon (removing medication, tannins from driftwood, etc.) it may be better to leave it out for now.
No way on the carbon. Don't put ferelizer in the water. You'll just get algae from the excess iron. You only need fertelizer if your plants suck all the nutrients out of the water. Unless you can see bubbles rolling off of your plants from the intense respiration they're undergoing, then they're not respirating enough to suck all the nutrients out of the water. I guanratee you this isn't happening under 15 watts of light.
You need more co2 or more light for anything to grow in your tank. 15 watts is not enough for anything but java moss. Try another light bulb %26 some flourish excell liquid carbon.
Anacharis also benifits from a little bit of clalcium in the water. a small handfull of crushed coral will do this well.
It has nothing to do with the filter media (the carbon). It is more likely that the Anacharis (a cold water plant) is rotting in water that is too warm. Do you have fish in the tank? The fish will provide more than enough nutrients for the plants (you don't need fertilizer, it is just a supplement for more nutrient-hungry plants). Just be patient and give the Anacharis a chance. Email me if you have any questions.

you can't expect a fertilizer to work in a period of 1 day, that's impossible
you need to keep your water clean, that means 25% weekly partial waterchanges with a gravelsiphon

Good luck
